DRC 2008
Permalink
I’m finally finding some time to reflect upon ID/IIT’s recent Design Research Conference (DRC), and honestly, my opinion of it has only improved since the conference was held on September 19-20. This is especially true after hearing many attendees of the recent IDSA conference in Phoenix express some disappointment – a great time, but not great content.
Empathy was a clear theme at this year’s DRC. While that’s not surprising for a design research conference it was important to hear that so many great thinkers and companies are agreed that we need to not only continue to understand people in a richer and deeper way but also we need to inspire our colleagues, clients, and design teams to embrace and act upon this understanding. Laura Richardson, Indi Young, Liz Sanders, and Lextant’s own Marty Gage, each brought a unique, complimentary perspective. Combined, their presentations spoke to refining all aspects of what we do – including:
➢ relating to users as partners or co-creators
➢ having natural conversations with these people
➢ findings ways to elicit and capture emotion
➢ translating insights into meaningful, actionable, aspirational, and inspirational
➢ even carefully choosing our words and parts of speech to maximize our impact
