The Pivot App Receives 2022 dmi: Design Value Award

Lextant is proud to announce our work with Smart ColumbusEtch, and COTA for the multimodal app, Pivot, has been recognized by DMI in this year’s 2022 Design Value Awards.

For 46 years, the Design Management Institute (DMI) has been an active advocate for the strategic value of Design. The organization brings together educators, researchers, designers, and leaders from every design discipline and industry to facilitate transformational organizational change and design driven innovation. DMI’s Design Value Awards honors teams that have delivered significant value through Design or Design Management practices, and recognize the value of Design as a strategic asset to drive innovation, creativity, culture change, agility, and revenue.

Access Through Mobility

As part of implementing the $40 million Smart City Challenge grant awarded to Columbus by the US Department of Transportation, Smart Columbus sought to improve mobility and increase access to jobs, education, and services for area residents and employees. Smart Columbus partnered with Lextant to better understand the mobility and transportation issues that people face and design a solution to improve access —Pivot, a multimodal trip-planning mobile app.

Lextant worked to enhance the user experience for the app in collaboration with Columbus-based Etch, LLC, that specializes in customized geospatial solutions that streamline mobility. Our team conducted research with residents in both the Linden and Easton neighborhoods to understand the key drivers that would fuel adoption of the app and to define the ideal user experience for development.

Lextant played an integral role with the development of the Pivot application for the Smart Columbus Program. Their team provided us with valuable insight that the Etch developers needed to help ease the anxiety associated with mixed-mode travel. Their UX/UI staff designed a user interface, based on the user feedback collected from the team to develop a user-friendly application that is still in use today.” – Darlene Magold, Etch, CEO

To build on the learnings the program gained and the challenges it encountered, Smart Columbus memorialized the findings in a playbook for other cities to follow in implementing similar mobility technologies. In 2021, the Pivot app was also recognized as one of the most innovative and influential smart projects from the Smart 50 Awards in partnership with the Smart Cities Connect Foundation and US Ignite.
